Swimming Project update - VFV Main Event Semester Break Activity

Water, Excitement & Fun went hand-in-hand today for some of the older VFV Internationally Sponsored Children.

Our 80 minutes 2 jeepney convoy safely reached the southern town of Burauen at approximately 9:30am. And the fun water times were enjoyed until when we left at 4:00pm.

All of the 30+ children from different regions of Tacloban came together after many months of counting down to the swimming activity.

We thank the many local volunteers for your valuable assistance in making this project a success.

The children's laughter and smiles are our reward 🙏

Swimming Project update - VFV Tadpoles Semester Break Activity

Meet our youngest swimming activity volunteer, Jerlyn.

Back in 2015, Jerlyn was one of our first 18 swimming lessons young children in Tacloban. Through her dedication to learn and focused training, Jerlyn is now one of our swimming projects leaders.

We invited Jerlyn to assist us in & around the pool for the VFV Tadpoles Swimming Event earlier in the week.

In recognition of Jerlyn's valuable volunteer assistance, she was awarded a gift from one of our project sponsors based in Australia with an operation in Manila. Compliant Business Processes.

Salamat 🙏

Swimming Project update - VFV Tadpoles Semester Break Activity

Today was an opportunity for the VFV Tadpoles to have a day of water fun. These are the youngest of the swimming lessons program children.

Excitement & fun resonated throughout the group all day. From the time we assembled at Volunteer for the Visayans HQ, to when we walked some of the children safely home.

Nutrition project update - Collaboration announcement for Bliss Day Care feeding centre

With its 3rd year anniversary approaching on Monday October 28, the Bliss Day Care kitchen continue to prepare 60+ meals daily for the 4-5 year old children that attend the pre-school.

Thankfully for the last couple of years the Philippines government has been contributing towards food supplies for about 60% of all feeding days each year. There are still inputs required on those days plus the other 40% of feeding days without Philippines government assistance were funded previously by UAP and it's kind supporters.

It's with great pleasure to announce that for the 2019/2020 school year we have a new Australian business kind co-sponsor. That Chocolate Movement.

We greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with another Aussie business with a wonderful Corporate Social Responsibility direction that is truely making a difference to disadvantaged communities around the world.

Emma and your team, you are amazing! Big kind hearts indeed.

Please family, friends and UAP supporters, check out their Facebook page discover more about their wonderful story. Also do yourself a favour and also try some of their yummy treats because part of your purchase will go towards the feeding centre costs.

Nutrition project update - DYC @ Bliss Day Care feeding centre

It was a busy week at the feeding centre & the lunch meals weren't the only tastebuds tantalising creations in the classroom.

This week the children had the opportunity to participate in food preparation. Keeping it all safe and fun, the kids had a DYC activity. Also known as "Decorate Your Cake" day.

Certainly a fun food related activity for the kids.

I certainly look forward to helping out in the kitchen next week.

Project Update: Community Assistance, Vietnam August 2019

Wearing my volunteering hat this time helping an Aussie friend & her family with their community assistance project in Vietnam.

Leanne and her wonderful kind family/friends fundraised recently in Australia for this Vietnam project. Their tremendous efforts raised much money to help 150 elders in 2 small remote villages in Vietnam, about 4hrs North of Nha Trang.

One of the villages was the hometown of Leanne's mother. Her family is very proud of the community in a beautiful region of Vietnam.

150 elders received food hampers containing oil, rice, noodles, sauces & other day-to-day necessities. Plus clothing and milk for the children in the communities.

Thank you Leanne & David for inviting me along to help out with your project. An amazing United effort by all involved, especially your sister.

And special thanks to your family for their open arms warm hospitality 🙏

Project Update: Laptops For School Classrooms - August 2019 Tacloban

Late last year during the last school supplies project at Nauguisan Primary School, we realised that there was a need to help this rural school again.

There were many grade levels sharing classrooms and the highest grade classes (grade 5 last year) were held in an outdoor makeshift classroom.

We are realistic & understand that there is only so much we can do as a team of volunteers. However thankfully two kind members from Les's local Melbourne church have generously donated a number of refurbished laptops & other material aid for distribution within disadvantaged communities. Special thanks to Arthur & Robyn for your kind generosity.

Last week we distributed 3 laptops to this rural school for use by the children in upcoming computer introduction activities. Most of the children have never used a computer but the early experience will help them in their students in years to come.

Project Update: School Supplies Distribution - July 2019 Tacloban

This project was always going to be a difficult one for planning. Simply because it brings to an end to the current school supplies project.

Why? Well I did say "current" so it will bring opportunities to explore other new projects globally to assist students with their learning journey 😉

The current project consists of 1,400 sets of school supplies. Over almost the 18 months period we have provided 1,300 young students pencil case sets containing items to help them with their studies.

Another reason why planning for this project was difficult.... We only have 100 sets left and finding the recipients in a region of the Philippines with so many was going to be a hard choice.

Thankfully my volunteer friend with a big heart in Tacloban, Mayen found a school in near a region that I first helped after Super Typhoon Yolanda.

Scandinavian Elementary School situated about 40 mins North of Tacloban City. The school was first built in 2003 by a Scandinavian Mission and now squeezes in 367 students from Kinder to Grade 6.

With only 100 school supplies sets remaining, Principal Lorena z. Bonifacio along with her team of 13 teachers were able to agree on who would be the right 100 young beneficiaries. I'm sure it wasn't easy but I personally met all of the chosen students a totally agree with thier choices.

On behalf of my volunteer event crew, thank you to the Grade 5 & Grade 6 students who put on special entertaining performances for the event. And thank you to the Principal and teaching staff for your wonderful hospitality.

Special mention to donors and sponsors of this program over the past 18 months. Your support has truly made a difference in the lives of 1,400 young children.

Project Update: Melbourne University Medical Aid Distribution - August 2019 (Tacloban

With volunteering in remote places you meet many wonderful people going about their lives making this world a better place to live. I met another amazing person today, Dr. Rowena Enage-de Veyra.

Dr Rowena is the only Doctor at Sta. Fe Rural Health Unit. A busy public clinic in a rural area away from Tacloban City. She treats on average 50 patients daily. Currently seeing 5-10 new cases of Dengue Fever daily, many being young children. I saw many children in the waiting room, I can only suspect from having Dengue myself late last year that a large percentage were suffering from Dengue Fever in its early stages.

Other cases are open wound trauma from accidents. Dr Rowena and her nursing stay also organises medical missions twice yearly in the region.

The centre has also a midwife in their birthing centre. I also had the opportunity to meet the midwife who also very much appreciated some of the medical equipment donations.

Being mindful of a full waiting room, the Doctor openly expressed her sincere appreciation for the much needed medical supplies.

The material aid donations were supplied under an ongoing partnership with Volunteer for the Visayans and Melbourne University Health Initiative. This partnership is now in its 3rd year & it continues to grow. With logistical challenges but that's where we help.

Project Update: Melbourne University Medical Aid Distribution - August 2019 (Tacloban

The project is in a small community out of Tacloban City, a community the very much relies on their local rural health clinic. I have met many overseas medical volunteers over the years with placements in this centre.

The very much need material aid supplies & volunteer support. Especially in times like now with many Philippines hospitals & clinics doing their best to treat patients due to the recent dengue outbreaks.

I know firsthand how important it is to have medical assistance after my own personal dengue experience in November 2018.

Project Update: Melbourne University Medical Aid Distribution - August 2019 (Tacloban)

Looking ahead to next weeks much needed medical aid distribution at a rural health clinic in the Philippines, we are grateful of DHL's efforts to secure the border release of the main airfreight consignment of the MUHI supplies that were held by Manila Customs for almost 2 weeks.

We are always learning about the phrase "expect the unexpected, in the Philippines". And apparently a new policy from the Philippines Department Of Finance regarding overseas material aid donations pre-shipping assessment.

Thankfully the 40kg consignment was given the green light to proceed & we hope the same applies to the medical aid donations that Les is personally carrying to the Philippines this weekend.

Another 50kgs of generous medical aid from Melbourne University for a Philippines Rural Health Clinic & the next VFV Medical Mission. Thank you Daniel Okyere from MUHI for your ongoing assistance.

The Pintados and Kasadyaan Festivals we're organised by two local government units in Palo, Leyte and Tacloban City. The fiesta was meaningful as it unites them to hold separate grand celebrations, a perfect time for expressing gratitude, of helping each other and of prayers.

With Unity, wonderful things can really be achieved.
The Fiesta did not only unite the people and its municipalities but also the supporters around the world as blessings and help continue to pour.

The 97 children & their trusted carers in the 3 social welfare centres we visited last week wish to say thank you to all of our two major co-sponsors, followers & the many talented event day international volunteers.

Through your generous support we were able to donate the following much needed supplies:

✓ 200 kilograms of Rice
✓ 50 Litres of Milk (equivalent)
✓ 400 Disposable Diapers/Nappies
✓ Snacks & treats
✓ 3 large bags of pre-loved clothing
✓ Hair Accessories
✓ Jewelry
✓ Fiesta Token Gifts

Thankfully through our Philippines' aid partner Volunteer for the Visayans we received government permission to enter these compounds but for their own protection we were unable to publish photos of the children.

However, we can assure you the volunteer event crew witnessed all 97 glowing smiles when we brought the fun of the Tacloban-Leyte Fiesta to these kids.

Swimming update -The main event Food preparation.

Today we are trying something new with regards to the lunch catering.

The local community is preparing lunch and we will take it on our long journey this morning.

Catering for 50 today equals a big united team effort.

Many thanks for Nanay Vacion for cooking plus Jeremy and Mano-John for sleeping overnight at VFV HQ so that cooking could start when the roosters woke up 👍

Philippines Nutrition project update

Healthy eating, good nutrition helps to build smart minds with young children.

A perfect example of this is a young girl from our preschool feeding program.

Miss Tzuchai is a gold medal honor student for the region.

Congratulations Tzuchai and thank you for the invitation to attend the graduation ceremony today.

Your father and mother are very proud. I witnessed this firsthand today.

I woke up this morning 2hrs before event assembly time to the sound of many excited children waiting for day 1 of the swimming activities.

I'm sure some of these kids hardly slept last night because of the excitement.

This is why we do what we do....

"Summer School Break Swimming Event"
(Tacloban, Tanauan & Palo) - April 2019
Update:

Today is the start of the 2-day End-of-School-year swimming activity excursions for all 50 kids from the previous United Aid Projects (UAP) swim school event in October 2018. This is another perfect opportunity of giving back and to make a real difference to the lives of children.

We could not accomplish our goals without the involvement and enthusiasm of all our committed supporters and one of them is our current major sponsor
A2B Solution Group, a consulting company providing services and assisting clients in achieving the most from CargoWise One System. The wonderful co-sponsorship cover some of the cost from the "Give Love Project" of Volunteer for the Visayans (VFV) in partnership of UAP last February 14, 2019 and also this month's end-of-school-year swimming activity.

Again, we appreciate your very generous sponsorship Anthony Brennan and the team at A2B Solution Group; also to all our kind supporters, we very much value the donations received.

United together, we can “Make a Difference”!

A second memorable day in Thailand assisting a group of kind hearted volunteers making a huge difference in the lives of 20 young Samui children.

The group is called Friends of Autism on Samui.

Gary Sparkes, it was a pleasure for Debbie Curtin and I to help your amazing team yesterday.

The kids laughter and smiles are a credit to your hard work and dedication to help these kids.

Also many thanks to On Street Bar Scooters for your continued support by donating 50% of your scooter rental to our aid projects in Thailand and the Philippines. Your generous donation will help Gary's volunteer team to cover the weekly venue hire fee for another 4 weeks.

See you all again soon

4 years ago to almost the day we delivered our first aid project in Tacloban

18 young children from 18 families attended this special event project held over 4 days.

Most of these families today are still trying to recover from the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda (aka Haiyan)

Let's rewind the clock and look back at the first UAP project 4 years ago.....

#FromLittleThingsBigThingsContinueToGrowPhilippines Project: Tacloban Swimming Program (March 2015)

Thank you to all of those who assisted Deb & I with the 4 day swim school program held over 2 weekends in March 2015. By all reports the event was a big success. We witnessed first hand how the children were at first still apprehensive about the water but by the 4th day the kids were more confident and actually began to enjoy swimming like kids should.

Some of kids could still be carrying dark memories of Typhoon Yolanda which devastated the area in 2014. A few of them needed a comforting cuddle at times. Hopefully though we have assisted in making those thoughts a thing of the past. Their new swimming skills will help them journey through life.

Special recognition
Firstly a big thank you to the awesome team at Volunteer For the Visayans in assisting us (with a special mention to Crisel who organised the children, jeepney and found the swimming venue).

A sincere thank you goes out to the other international volunteers who gave up their much needed recharge on the weekends - your assistance was very much appreciated.

We very much appreciated the kind donation of 20 pairs of swimming goggles by Elite Swimming in Ascot Vale. These are being stored at VFV headquarters in Tacloban City for future swimming lessons.

North Melbourne Football Club (AFL) also donated 20 members caps. These were distributed upon the conclusion of the 4 day event to the sponsored kids who attended the swim program. All the kids were very excited and proud to wear their new North Melbourne Kangaroos caps.

Participants
VFV carefully selected 18 of their younger sponsored Tacloban children to attend the swim program . Some of the VFV team not only assisted in and around the pool but also participated in a special adults class during each snack break. Also the other sponsored children that missed out this time will hopefully have a chance when we return in October 2015 & April 2016.

Venue
Choosing a venue to hold the swimming classes isn't an easy task in Tacloban City. VFV negotiated with a local hotel (Leyte
Park Resort) for use of their guest swimming pool for the 4 days. The cost was per head and came to a total of 12,000 peso
(A$355). VFV initially secured special funding to cover this cost but we decided that the 12,000 peso could be distributed in
other ways within the wonderful VFV projects (i.e. nutrition program). We decided to cover the venue cost this time and
will attempt to secure some international sponsors for next time.

Group structure
The children were split into groups of 6. When it was their turn for a lesson they were all eager to learn. We discovered
some really good natural swimmers. Some of our local Tacloban friends even commented that one day it would be great to
see some water sport champions (maybe they will even get that local water polo team to take on the Americans one day).
Oh, almost forgot to mention the fun times when the kids didn't have lessons - it was all about having fun and being safe in
the water. Fun games kept everyone entertained!

After swimming snack time
At the end of each day the kids were treated to some peanut butter sandwiches and sweet snacks. The two loaves of bread
turned into four by the end of the program. The cost of these snacks were ultimately covered by the $55 raised at work
(Clemenger International Freight Port Melbourne office) during the February healthy snacks pilot program. Actually the $55
stretched further to also allow us to supply sunscreen protection for the kids. Many thanks to the majority of CIF staff that
participated in the CIF Healthy Snacks pilot program.

Transportation
The jeepney ride back to VFV headquarters was always full of exhausted sleeping kids. If only we could tap into those
dreams....

Where to next?
Next step is to return back to Tacloban City this October to continue with some further lessons. During this visit we ideally
would like to train a local VFV team member to become a support instructor. This support will become invaluable when we return next April for a week long summer vacation swim program for the sponsored children which will be incorporated in the school holidays. This will enable the children to benefit with a 5 consecutive day program. Our next visit will concentrate on smaller groups with more emphasis on stroke techniques and a more intense water safety element will also be included.

Like to help somehow?
Feel free to contact us if you would like to offer support of any kind. Ideally we would like to remove all swimming lesson project costs for VFV so that they can focus on another great job of pre-event coordinating. We aim to cover not only the venue, equipment & lunch costs but also the transportation if we can.

Any support will be greatly appreciated as Deb & I can’t do it all alone.

Exactly one week ago today when Les Treacy surprised his sponsored child, Marla.

There's nothing really more satisfying than seeing the warm smile on her face, as well as the excitement and happiness of her classmates.

We had a good and fun interaction with everyone and the school supplies given to them were greatly appreciated.

Indeed, it is among the highlights of this trip.

If any of you would also like to sponsor a child in Tacloban region, you may send a direct message here or please feel free to visit the Volunteer for the Visayans website for more info:

GIVE LOVE PROJECT 2019

"Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes. How do you measure a year in the life".

As this year's VFV Valentines chosen song "Seasons of Love" says, it gives us an inspiring message on how to measure the amount of time and life in love.

The song and this year's Give Love program also reminds that love is important in Life and it is important to love others.

By giving of yourself, your time, your heart to people that you know and you don’t, who aren't that fortunate by making them feel that they are cared for too.

Last February 14, we had an opportunity to extend help, allot time and give love to 85 families from Brgy. Lapay-Tanauan, Leyte and 58 beneficiaries from Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth (RRCY).

In collaboration with Volunteer for the Visayans (VFV), we were able to deliver pre-loved clothes, hygiene kits, rose plants and rice to our brothers and sisters.

Clearly, every family, every child deserves basic necessities and attention. Regardless of the season or weather, what matters is "now" and how to get involved.

Again, on behalf of Les Treacy & United Aid Projects (UAP), I would like to sincerely thank our friends, families, donors, co-sponsors for your kind support and for all your help which made this project possible.

Let us continue to spread Love, have impact to someone's Life and most importantly, to make a difference.
